FAQ – International and NYA Next Programs

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about applying to the International Program and NYA Next.

Can I apply if I have not done the Canadian Program?

No. In order to be eligible for these two programs, you have to have already done the Canadian Program.

How old do you have to apply?

You have to be 22 years old or younger on June 1st, 2020.

How Do I Choose Between International or Next?

The two programs are pretty different from each other, and both have different objectives. You should think about or write down your own goals for yourself – is it to try new things? Go to school? Become a leader? Then, look carefully at each program and see which one fits best with what your goals are. If you are really unsure you can call any of the NYA Staff, or you can apply to both programs and we can help you figure it out!

What if I don’t have a passport?

You can apply for the Program even if you do not have a passport. NYA helps all International Program Participants get a passport. NYA also pays the cost. NYA Next Participants do not leave the country so they will not need a passport.

What if I didn’t finish my Fall Assignments?

You can still apply if you did not complete your Fall Assignments. It is important to NYA that you do the assignments, but you can still apply.

How do I apply?

To apply, fill out an application and get two people to fill out referral forms or write reference letters for you. You can find the application online or you can request a paper copy to be mailed or faxed to you.

When is the deadline?

Applications for the International or Next Program are due in late November.

What if I am living away from home or in the South?

You can still apply. We ask that you still try to find a Mentor to work with you, but if you are having trouble let us know and we will help you make another arrangement.

Do I need a mentor?

We ask that everyone applying try to find a mentor. If you can’t find someone to mentor you,  you can still apply and we will help you.

Where will the International Program go this year?

It depends on every year. Recently teams have travelled to Costa Rica. Previously, Teams have done 3 weeks of training in Ottawa at Algonquin College and then travelled to Guatemala. Before that, the Teams travelled to Botswana for the whole 7 weeks. We are working on deciding what is best for 2020.

Where will the NYA Next Program take place?

The NYA Next Program will take place in Ottawa and have participants stay on campus at Algonquin College for one month.

Do International and NYA Next Participants have to do assignments?

Yes. There are fewer assignments than in Canadian Program but some require more thought and research.

Do International and NYA Next Program Participants have to fundraise?

Each Participant has to fundraise $1500.

When do you pick Participants?

Everyone who applies will have a phone interview that will take place in January. After the interviews, we will pick the Participants and Alternates for each program.
