About Northern Compass

Northern Youth Abroad believes that a strong, prosperous, healthy North relies on creating opportunities for young people to feel prepared, hopeful, and ready to take on every challenge. Northern Compass addresses the barriers that can exist for Northern youth attempting to navigate education and career decisions in high and then successfully transition into post-secondary education (PSE), careers and beyond through a broad range of programs and supports aimed at building opportunity, connection and capacity.

Post-Secondary Application Fee Support

We don’t want application fees to hold you back. Northern Compass can cover the cost of applying to college, university, or trades programs (up to $300.00 per student each school year). Email northerncompass@nya.ca for details.

School Supplies

Need supplies? Request a pack, and we’ll send you a notebook, pens, pencils, highlighters, and more. Need something specific? Just let us know.

Tutoring

Get matched with a virtual tutor who can help with assignments, test prep, essay writing, and more, whatever you need to succeed.

Learn More

Socials & Events

Join virtual and in-person events with other Northerners – things like beading nights, language nights, games nights, sporting events, dinner & a movie, and more. All at no cost to the student.

We can help connect you with supports at your school, such as counselling, academic support, clubs, and wellness services.

Peer Mentorship

This is for upper-year students who would like to support others, and lower-year students who would like to be paired with a mentor. Open to any students from Nunavut, the NWT and Yukon! For more information, email northerncompass@nya.ca.
