Brooklyn’s summer in Nova Scotia

July 6th, 2026

Hii! My name is Brooklyn. I’m 15 years old and from Naujaat, Nunavut. My hobbies are drawing, painting, hanging out with my friends, and going out on the land. What got me into joining Northern Youth Abroad is my older brother Bryce, who also joined the program two years ago. He told me how he learned many things, met awesome people, got out of his comfort zone, and was happy with how it turned out. That’s why I decided to try for Northern Youth Abroad, and I’m so happy I did. I never thought I’d be in a big program like this, but I’m glad I joined. I’ve gotten out of my comfort zone and even did a presentation, which was something I never thought I’d do in front of people. Here’s a picture of Leela and me out at Truro Park in Nova Scotia, and I also conquered Jacob’s Ladder with Dylan, who is another participant and is in Prince Edward Island.

Working in a new province, meeting chill people, making friends, and travelling without a chaperone or parent — I can go on and on about how this program gives me so many opportunities and benefits. Right now I am in Nova Scotia near Kempt Shore, about an hour from the little community of Wolfville, where I am also working. It’s a nice little town with so many places and kind people.

Where I am volunteering is at a place called Wolfville Animal Hospital and Acadia University Garden. Both places are awesome, with kind co-workers and interesting stuff while I work at both places. What I do at the Wolfville Animal Hospital is cleaning cages and seeing cute animals (also watching surgery), while at the Acadia University Garden I work with plants, weeding, transplanting, and learning about plants.

Let’s focus on the people I’ve been living with and what it’s like here. Going from living in a small community with sand roads and no trees to living in a town with trees everywhere I look, new people, and many buildings with different jobs was a shock. It’s hard trying to adjust to living in Wolfville, but with time it’s gotten better, and people are a big part of adjusting too. My host parents Addison and Bronwen, and my buddy Leela, who is also volunteering and working with kids, helped me with adjusting here. They helped me with many things and are very kind people, which makes my life in Wolfville so much easier. I’m so thankful for the people in Northern Youth Abroad for doing so much for us participants. It gives youth a chance to see how many opportunities you have in life.
