NYA Micro Grants

NYA is releasing a number of small funding grants available to support northern-based activities, projects, and ideas that engage youth. The deadline to apply for and use funds is March 31, 2021.

Northern Youth in Service

Open to youth in Nunavut, the NWT, or Yukon, aged 14-25

Northern Youth in Service (NYiS) is an NYA Program that helps youth start projects in their own communities. Youth receive training and funding that they need to create and start a project, and they can work with other youth, as a group, in a class, as a network, or by themselves. Past projects have included beading programs, hunting programs, sewing groups, art projects – any project of any type is a possibility!

Tutors for Students

Open to any student in high school or post-secondary (college or university) from Nunavut, the NWT or Yukon.

We will be having multiple virtual drop-in times for students to join and chat with a tutor and can also set up 1- on-1 sessions. Sessions are free and virtual and can be over video chat, email, messenger, by call, or texting.

Some of the things we can help out with include: Help with class material, understanding course content, specific homework questions, editing or helping with assignments, study skills and tips, exam preparation and test-taking skills, time management, organization and task managing, managing stress, and building confidence.

Online Activities

For anyone!

In the coming weeks, we’re offering a number of free, online activities for youth (and adults!) across the north. Sessions include dance, fitness, outdoors and land-based activities, art, and more! Individuals or classes can join via zoom or Facebook Live.

At-home activities

Available for anyone in Nunavut, the NWT, or Yukon. Supplies are first come, first serve.

We have some beading and science kits that we can send out for hands-on activities. If you’re interested, send us an email at

Pen Pals

Open to any Canadian youth.

Improve your writing and communication skills by sending letters of kindness! We’re working with youth across canada to send letters of encouragement to each other in the coming weeks. Youth who write a letter will receive one – secret Santa style! If you or your class is interested, email We will send you the instructions on how to participate.

Northern Compass

Open to any youth from Nunavut, NWT, or Yukon

Right now the Northern Compass team is working with students and youth from across the territories (Nunavut, NWT, and Yukon) to get the resources, guidance, and support they need to be successful in their next transitions.

Alumni Bursary

Available for any Alumni who have already completed one or more of NYA’s core programs.

Since 2011, NYA has offered over 85 bursaries to Alumni to support them financially as they pursue their education. Created to provide support to members of the NYA alumni who are pursuing post-secondary education, this year NYA will award a number of $500 bursaries.
