This is a full-time salaried position as a one-year contract as we try out a new staffing model. It’s perfect for someone who is interested in a fast-paced Startup culture, but can also work with the youth we serve. The right person for this role will be able to adapt, innovate, and work well within a small team. Our preference is for someone who can work out of our Ottawa office once we are back there together, but are open to considering remote options.

- Northern Youth Abroad (NYA) is an organization that serves youth living in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories (http://nya.ca/about-us/). We offer experiential education programs that seek to foster cross-cultural awareness, individual career goals, and global citizenship in Northern youth. Created in 1998 NYA has more than 500 program alumni from across Nunavut and the NWT, 98% of whom are Inuit, First Nation or Métis.

- NYA has a small staff that works together to make big things happen. This position is program and participant-focused but will include a wide range of tasks on any given day. No two days are exactly the same it seems.
- This position will mostly focus on NYA’s new(er) initiatives. So new, that some of them are not even at the point that we will share their details here. The position will require engagement with stakeholders, planning, participant support, logistics and coordination. You will work with other staff and volunteers to develop quality programming
- Other tasks will include helping with funding applications, generating reports, coordinating volunteers, attending events or activities and more.
- This position may require travel when travel is a thing again.
What We’d Like You to Bring
- Experience working with youth in a supportive role, and comfortable providing mentorship, guidance and encouragement in a positive and encouraging way. Previous experience in assessing needs, counselling, and education are all assets.
- Extreme comfort with development phase projects. This is not the job for someone who thrives with a structured path forward.
- Prior experience working with Northern Canada and/or Indigenous youth is a highly desired asset, as is knowledge of the issues affecting youth living in the Canadian north. We strongly encourage applications from NYA Alumni, and others with a connection to the North, including Inuit, First Nations and Metis candidates.
- Experience in coordinating projects including logistics, travel, reporting, evaluation – and everything else that makes a great experience for Participants.
- The ability to help youth thrive as they endeavor to develop skills and take on new challenges. This involves balancing support and high expectations, being encouraging and resourceful.
- Great organization, strong attention to detail, and eagerness to do great work, find new solutions, and work together to explore new potential.
- The ability to thrive with competing deadlines, changing priorities, and under pressure.
- To be a natural trouble shooter and solution finder.
- Experience working in a supportive role with youth is an asset, as is experience in non-profits, and with volunteers.
- A strong desire to play a big role on a small team – we value relationships that are based on kindness, generosity, collaboration and mutual support.
- We like technology – we think that it makes our small team able to do a lot more, and really just makes us better. We use a combination of traditional software suites like Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Cloud along with leveraging newer apps and technology like Slack, ClickUp, and Airtable. Therefore, we want you to be comfortable with technology, and generally open and willing to learn. We are mostly a MAC office.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic, and sometimes hectic, work environment, with a group of deeply passionate, youth-focused staff
- Ability to work flexible hours and overtime including evenings and weekends during peak program times, and during special events and activities.
